Won’t you start tweeting, Mr Bates?

We at Berkeleyside have a penchant for Twitter (follow us at berkeleyside) and appreciate the networking/sharing possibilities the micro-blogging site offers.

So we were pleased to see that Berkeley’s mayor Tom Bates jumped on the bandwagon back in April and opened up a Twitter account, which can be found at MayorTomBates (hat-tip: michellequinn).

Excavating Berkeley’s New Deal past

On Wednesday, Gray Brechin will give a talk entitled “A New Deal for the East Bay: Excavating the Buried Civilization of the Great Depression” in which the historical geographer will look at how New Deal public work agencies put thousands of men and women to work to transform Berkeley and its sister cities within less than a decade.

The Berkeley Rep, aglow with the success of its latest smash, American Idiot, and from the general recognition of its artistic prowess, is also holding what promises to be an entertaining series of “conversations” hosted by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll.

First up, on November 9, is Pixar‘s Brad Bird (pictured left), the internationally acclaimed director of award-winning movies including Ratatouille and The Incredibles.
