Bay Bridge closing down after cable snap
The Bay Bridge is being closed down after cables on the upper deck fell and hit three cars earlier this evening causing major traffic headaches to commuters heading westwards from the East Bay.
A photo of the incident was captured by larfo and posted to Twitter (above).
Kron4 has video and is reporting that the strand that came loose was from the eyebar on which emergency work was conducted over the Labor Day weekend.

Hoisted from the comments: issues the city council could take on
Regular commenter Thomas Lord has some thoughts on the city council agenda, if it wants to turn from “ineffectual statements about world affairs”:
There are a heck of a lot of unoccupied, neglected properties around my neighborhood in West Berkeley. Some are empty, foreclosed places. One is an 8(?) unit condo that was never even completed – just boarded up after most but not all construction was completed.
One of the foreclosure homes recently … Continue reading »
Streetside memorial to 5-year old killed by truck
I drive by the intersection of Warring and Derby several times a week and I am always struck by the flowers, balloons, and cards set up at the spot where 5-year old Zachary Cruz was killed in February.
I do not know if it is his parents, his family’s friends, or just members of the broader community who place all of the loving tributes. And at times I wonder if there isn’t a more appropriate — and by that … Continue reading »
On the agenda for the city council
Tonight’s city council meeting has both substantive and symbolic items on the agenda. The council meeting is webcast from 7pm.
There will be a first reading of an ordinance requiring employers with 10 or more employees to offer a pre-tax payroll deduction for commuter benefits. As part of the economic stimulus legislation passed in February, the potential benefit to employees increased dramatically. Although Berkeley currently has no laws on the pre-tax payroll deduction, some of the city’s … Continue reading »

America’s Most Wanted in Berkeley
America’s Most Wanted, the Fox show that brings the glare of mass television to the task of tracking down fugitives from justice, will be filming on Allston Way between 9th and 10th Streets today (hat tip: John).
The program is in Berkeley to “recreate” to film an introduction about the gang murder that took place in May this year.
Fox put up signs on the street last Thursday, generating some heated email on the local neighborhood’s listserv. … Continue reading »
