Fat Pig: does size matter?
“Fat Pig”, Neil LaBute’s play which has just opened at the Aurora in Berkeley, will undoubtedly have you laughing and squirming with discomfort in equal measure.
At issue is society’s attitude to plus-size women and LaBute, predictably, pulls no punches in the script which has a young man struggling to handle his own feelings and those of his office co-workers once they discover he is dating a larger woman.

Berkeley hikers accused of spying in Iran
Three graduates of UC Berkeley, Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal, were accused today of espionage by Tehran’s chief prosecutor. The three were arrested on July 31 on the Iran-Iraq border and have been held since without charge. The accusation by chief prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi is being reported as a likely prelude to the three being brought to trial in Tehran.

330 feet long! California gains sushi roll record
Students, cooks, and food fans created the world’s longest sushi roll Sunday at a marathon sushi-rolling session at UC Berkeley.
The amateur chefs created a 330-foot long sushi roll — 30 feet longer than the world record set in Hawaii in 2001.
It took 200 pounds of rice, 80 pounds each of avocado and cucumber and 180 pounds of fish. Some parts of the roll were stuffed with tofu for those who don’t eat fish.

Read encountered Child the next year at another Book Passage conference. She was able to report she had found a publisher for her manuscript. To Read’s amazement, Child suggested that they go on … Continue reading »
