The tax basis issue is also interesting. Sure, we've prop 13 and yadda yadda yet I know of one property that went this way: (1) decrepit; (2) occupation permit revoked; (3) purchased; (4) rehabilitated / extensively renovated; (5) occupation permit restored; (6) offered for sale north of the half-million market per unit in a 3-unit condo. How, in that, does the tax basis work out to substantially under $200K per unit? On the day the occupation permit was restored it was worth something in the half-million territory.

In my walks around N. Berkeley I've seen some single family homes that fit this description. I think it's a very interesting idea.

There's an abandoned 10+ unit apartment building at 2416 Roosevelt. It's been empty for at least seven years that I know of, though someone just put up a black metal fence.

The tax basis is less than 320 K, according to the Alameda County Assessor's Office .

But Zillow says it's worth over a million dollars: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2416-Roosevelt-Ave-Berkeley-CA-94703/82838523_zpid/

Seems like a waste, I know people who would love to live in this nabe.

Deirdre: another map worth trying to assemble would be an accurate property ownership map (of both commercial and private spaces). I think that would be pretty darn interesting.

We should develop a Berkeleyside photo album documenting all the mysterious ghost properties in Berkeley. Two large unoccupied apartment buildings in central Berkeley fit this description.

Hmmm... There's supposed to be a photo after the part that says "This is a shot of the downed tree". Is there some way to correct that omission? (I can re-send the photo to tips@, if needed.)
