This evening if you visit the neighborhood just east of the North Berkeley BART station, you’ll see a labor of love by the residents. Between Berkeley Way, Rose Street, Grant, and California Streets, hundreds of luminaria, lanterns made from candles, paper bags, and sand, lining the sidewalks, extending for blocks.
Neighbors have collaborated to carry out this tradition for several years, every Christmas Eve that the weather permits.
The residents ask that if you stop by to enjoy the lights, that you please park your car and stroll, rather than doing a drive-by.

Beautiful. Thank you to all those who participated.
As a part-time amateur chronicler of the North Berkeley luminaria events (for instance, see this post from a few years back: http://infospigot.typepad.com/infospigot_the_chronicles/2005/12/luminaria_05_ma.html), I’m wondering where on Berkeley Way the lights were put out this year. I went looking at about 10 Christmas morning, but apparently they’d been picked up already.
