On the agenda for tonight’s city council meeting
After a long holiday break, the Berkeley City Council will meet again tonight at 7 p.m. in the council chambers on Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. Interesting issues on the agenda include:
A directive to seek safety improvements at number of Bicycle Boulevard crossings. There is some funding available for the work through Caltrans’ settlement with the Fourth Bore Coalition. “Flanagan made me choke on my chard”
Berkeley freelance writer Sarah Henry, who muses about food and family matters on her blog, Lettuce Eat Kale, was so hot under the collar after reading Caitlin Flanagan’s “Cultivating Failure” article in The Atlantic, she had to wait a week to cool off before responding. Dwight and Fulton: A veritable graffiti fest
Someone has really gone to town plastering the corner building at Dwight and Fulton with graffiti (above). No part of the exterior has been spared: windows, walls, even the real-estate broker’s sign advertising the fact that the offices are up for lease or sale has been “tagged”.

Saving Berkeley High’s Old Gymnasium: A proposal
Berkeleyside exclusive: The Old Gymnasium on the Berkeley High School campus, a landmarked building originally designed by William Hays, has fallen into disrepair — see slideshow above — and the School District is suggesting it be demolished. Noted Berkeley architect Henrik Bull has a different suggestion:
