Three Berkeley High science teachers have done an analysis of class sizes at the school. It’s an attempt to inject facts into the debate around struggling students at BHS, and whether cutting science lab time is an effective way to close the achievement gap at the school.

Part of the undercurrent in the debate is the tussle between the two largest programs at BHS — Academic Choice and Berkeley International High School — and the “small schools” — CAS, AHA, SSJE and CPA. The School Governance Council, which originally considered the proposal to eliminate 0 and 7th hour science, has a high representation of small school faculty.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today that the three UC Berkeley students detained in Iran and charged with spying may be swapped with jailed Iranians in the United States, Reuters reports.

“We do not like to have any person in jail. Some discussions are going on to swap the three with jailed Iranians in America,” Ahmadinejad told state television. He did not clarify whether the discussions were held with U.S. officials.

The three were detained after they strayed into Iran from … Continue reading »

Michael Lewis is one lucky writer. Not to downplay his talent.

The adaption of his book The Blind Side was nominated for an Oscar award for Best Picture Tuesday morning, and Sandra Bullock got a nod for Best Actress. (Not that she acknowledged Lewis when she won a Golden Globe; she thanked everyone but him.)

It also looks like Brad Pitt can’t get enough of this Berkeley writer.

Pitt was supposed to star in Moneyball, Lewis’ book … Continue reading »

Dave Eggers: Have a few pirate fights with your writing lesson

Dave Eggers

Dave Eggers drew a large audience to Berkeley Rep Monday night, and he treated his listeners to an amusing collection of self-deprecating stories. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll just had to probe Eggers gently, and then the author of numerous bestselling books was off on a roll.

The most interesting thing the pair discussed was the Eggers-sponsored collection of tutorial centers around the country. When Eggers rented a vacant storefront at 826 Valencia Street in San Francisco, he had … Continue reading »

D-Day for BHS science labs?

Superintendent Huyett and Principal Slemp
Print Friendly

It’s increasingly looking like the debate over the future of science labs at Berkeley High is coming down to political maneuvering and brinkmanship.

When BUSD Superintendent Bill Huyett met BHS parents on January 19, there was a clear impression that some acceptable compromise had been reached that would both safeguard extra science lab time at the high school and find resources to improve the school’s bad achievement gap. There were suggestions that a letter would go out soon. BHS … Continue reading »

Big Screen Berkeley: A good trailer is hard to find

Do filmmakers and studios pay enough attention to the humble preview?

Trailers have only a few minutes in which to pitch their product, but all too frequently they consist of hastily cobbled together collections of off-cuts. (I’ve seen countless previews featuring scenes or shots that ultimately didn’t appear in the movie.)

Often they give away too much plotline, or simply fail to present a film in the best possible light — an especially critical issue for foreign or indie … Continue reading »
