Open house pick: Donald Olsen mid-century modern
Another newly listed Berkeley home with historical interest today — this one designed in 1956 by noted modernist architect Donald Olsen.
The home, at 123 Fairlawn Drive, displays Olsen’s penchant for boxy volumes and lots of floor-to-ceiling windows providing plentiful natural light. There’s also indoor-outdoor living possibilities, a more recently added “gourmet” kitchen, as well as views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Olsen, a former professor at UC’s College of Environmental Design, lives in Berkeley in a house he designed for … Continue reading »

UC Press has new California initiative
Kim Robinson moved to Berkeley a year ago to take a job as regional publisher of UC Press. Her mandate: enhance the number and quality of books published on California and the West.

BHS science compromise slipping away?
Parents attending the open house at Berkeley High School last night were handed a leaflet from “concerned parents and staff” about the science/equity controversy at the school. According to the leaflet, BHS principal Jim Slemp is opposed to the compromise plan suggested by Berkeley Unified School District Superintendent Bill Huyett:
Superintendent Huyett has publically [sic] stated his support for extra time for college preparatory science and for AP science courses. However, Principal slemp wants to eliminate this instructional … Continue reading »

Pick of the listings: Estate with historical pedigree
Just listed: 22 Roble Road, otherwise known as the McDuffie Villa, in the Claremont neighborhood which was built for Duncan McDuffie in 1924 as his personal residence.
Originally a country estate designed so suit a lifestyle replete with servants and grand entertaining, the property is sited on nearly one acre with extensive gardens.
The home is, apparently, no longer quite as grand as it was, however, and is described by the listing agent as “a work-in-progress”. It seems that … Continue reading »
