Open house pick: Donald Olsen mid-century modern

Another newly listed Berkeley home with historical interest today — this one designed in 1956 by noted modernist architect Donald Olsen.

The home, at 123 Fairlawn Drive, displays Olsen’s penchant for boxy volumes and lots of floor-to-ceiling windows providing plentiful natural light. There’s also indoor-outdoor living possibilities, a more recently added “gourmet” kitchen, as well as views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

UC Press has new California initiative

Kim Robinson moved to Berkeley a year ago to take a job as regional publisher of UC Press. Her mandate: enhance the number and quality of books published on California and the West.

BHS science compromise slipping away?

Parents attending the open house at Berkeley High School last night were handed a leaflet from “concerned parents and staff” about the science/equity controversy at the school. According to the leaflet, BHS principal Jim Slemp is opposed to the compromise plan suggested by Berkeley Unified School District Superintendent Bill Huyett:

Originally a country estate designed so suit a lifestyle replete with servants and grand entertaining, the property is sited on nearly one acre with extensive gardens.
