New Teen Center in the running for $250K grant

The Berkeley Teen Center, which broke ground earlier this month on the corner of Center and MLK, has been nominated as a possible candidate to win a $250,000 Pepsi Challenge Grant.

The Berkeley-Albany YMCA center will  provide programs and services in support of academic achievement, youth employment and career planning and leadership development for all teens, including those considered at-risk and under-resourced. It will be housed in a renovated service center donated by PG&E.

The $250K would go towards building materials and construction costs. The entire project is estimated to cost $8 million.

In order to win the grant, the center needs votes from the community. Voters will effectively be giving the project a thumbs-up and affirming that it is a good idea. The center is currently placed at #11 in the nominations queue.
