I was aware of pedestrian safety month and feeling guilty for any distracted driving I do. This is terrible news and even worse that it's a dui.

I echo the sentiments above. My condolences to the family. And let's give a little credit to the driver who had at least enough sense to stop and not flee (per SFGate).

Condolences to this family, what a terrible tragedy! This problem is terrible in Berkeley. And both drivers and pedestrians are to blame. We don't know the facts in this instance, but in my experience, drivers go way too fast on major thoroughfares, leaving little time to react to pedestrians. Pedestrians walk off the curb way too quickly, stepping in front of cars that are already much too close to stop at that point. Drivers don't realize how vulnerable pedestrians are, and pedestrians think a car can stop instantaneously. Depending on the car, it can take 3 car lengths or more, if the car is proceeding at the appropriate speed limit. And then there are the bicyclists. I bike too. And I see way too many bicyclists not obeying the basic rules of the road, not stopping at intersections, etc. Let's hope people start to wake up to the fact that people are fragile, and cars are lethal. In the end, it won't matter who is right. The car will always win. Please be careful out there!
