Pick of the listings: Berkeley character in full color

This vibrantly decorated home at 2231 McKinley Avenue a block west of Berkeley High School has apparently been known since the 1970s as the “Green Dragon’s Eye”.

It takes a leap of imagination to visualize what it could look like with a more toned-down presentation, but if you are partial to the architectural style, there may be real potential for transformation here. Having said that, you may like the place just as it is, in which case it could be yours for $819,000.

There’s a three++bedroom/two-bathroom main house, plus a one-bed, one-bath detached rental cottage (pictured below right). The listing describes the house  as having “turn of the century charm with lots of interesting architectural details and Berkeley character”. New foundations on both structures were put down after 1994. It last sold in 2002 for an intriguingly low $140,500.

To a former Congressman. PS shows the mortgage was $211k. Now how hard was that…

And a one time member of Camper Van Beethoven. How Berkeley can you be?

Originally sold in 1994 for $199k to a couple and two sisters (as tenants in common). Individual TIC portions have traded hands (I believe this is what we’re seeing in 2002), but now the whole property is being sold.
