Cal could make significant savings, consultants report

UC Berkeley could save more than $100 million from its ongoing operations cost base, but it will take a one-off investment of up to $70 million over three years to achieve significant annual savings, according to a report released today by consulting firm Bain & Co which was hired by Cal in October to help it to reduce expenditure and increase efficiencies.

Berkeley High family loses home to fire — needs help

A student at Berkeley High School and his family recently lost their home and all of their belongings in a fire. They need help — in particular donations of furniture, kitchen utensils, clothing, shoes or any other items you feel able to donate which you think would be useful in their time of need.

Berkeley High’s Parent Resource Center is coordinating donations. Contact Irma Parker at BHS on (510) 644-8524.

Nobel Peace Prize winner weighs in on UC/Israel divestment question

The question of whether the University of California at Berkeley should divest funds from companies that do business in Israel has gone viral and international.

The latest celebrity to weigh in on the controversial issue is former Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. Dwight offices: The case of the disappearing graffiti

We are happy to report that the owners of the office building on the corner of Dwight and Fulton have cleaned up their act — or at least they have cleaned up swathes of graffiti.

When we wrote about this property on January 19, we described it as a “graffiti fest” as its walls and windows were plastered with scrawls (pictured above, left). At that time the building was looking for a new tenant or owner.

Buyers circling Mr Mopps’

When word got out through a Berkeleyside article that Mr. Mopps’, the venerable Berkeley toy store, might be going out of business, loyal customers immediately started to mourn. They filled the Berkeleyside comments section with memories of the past and regret that their children wouldn’t get to enjoys the store’s eclectic selection of toys and books.
