BHS science labs — the denouement
After months of wrangling, the Berkeley Unified School District board last Wednesday finally passed a compromise on science labs at Berkeley High. Under the plan, proposed by superintendent Bill Huyett (photo right), AP and IB science labs are preserved, and other science courses will provide optional labs in either 0 or 7th period, as happens this year.
The plan that passed provides 1.4 full-time equivalents (FTEs) for two before or after school labs for AP and IB science … Continue reading »

Mitch Kapor’s Berkeley home: The debate continues
This last few days, Berkeleyside’s inbox has been filling up with copies of letters from north Berkeley neighbors — addressed to Councilmembers and/or the city’s Mayor — opposed to the construction of a new home at 2707 Rose Street, the application for which, made by Mitch Kapor, has been approved by Berkeley’s planning board, but which is being appealed.
If this isn’t a saga, we don’t know what is. But it’s a live issue here in our city which many people feel strongly about. Hence our commitment to covering it as best we can. Here’s the story so far:
On January 28, Berkeley’s Zoning Adjustment Board approved a plan submitted on behalf of Mitchell Kapor to build a new home at 2707 Rose Street. The approval is being appealed. The zoning board is due to hear the appeal on April 27.
Berkeleyside first drew attention to this issue on January 25. The original application can be viewed here and drawings associated with the application can be seen here. The full appeal can be viewed here. We published an explanation of the thinking behind the appeal, written by architect Gary Parsons, here.
A group of neighbors supports Mitch Kapor’s proposed home. You can read about their views here. These views are challenged by another group of neighbors, whose opinions can be read here.
The Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association (BAHA) is supporting the appeal. Read BAHA President Daniella Thompson’s letter outlining BAHA’s stand here.
The letters we have received in the past few days touch on a variety of issues. Eight are published below (and you’ll understand if, for space reasons, we put a page break in this post).
Also worth noting: Berkeleyside has been in touch with Mitch Kapor himself who says he will not be making a comment at the moment as he doesn’t have anything to add to what Susan and Paul Opsvig, his potential immediate neighbors, and his architects, Donn Logan and Marcy Wong, have already contributed to Berkeleyside. … Continue reading »

The Most Dangerous Man: Special Berkeley screening
It’s a Berkeley event, involving an independent Berkeley movie theater, screening a documentary made by a Berkeley resident, to benefit a Berkeley school. Berkeleyside couldn’t live with itself if it didn’t cover this one.
On Thursday May 6th, at 7:15 pm, Elmwood Rialto will present a screening of The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, a documentary which tells the thrilling tale of the run-up to Watergate. The film will … Continue reading »
No ticket to hear Bill Gates? Hear him anyway
Bill Gates is coming to UC Berkeley today, and if you were not one of the lucky few to get tickets, do not despair.
Gates’ comments will be broadcast live on a number of websites, including one he set up for his swing through colleges in the United States. He’s calling that “The Gates Notes”, (hmmm, no apostrophe), and it has sections on what he is thinking about, what he is learning about, and his travels, among … Continue reading »

Inca Service: Not the end of the road
On April 9, we published a post about the imminent closure of Inca Service, the auto repair shop located at the Chevron station on the corner of Telegraph and Ashby, run by Hugo Cornejo since 1983.
Chevron, which bought the service station from Cornejo six years ago, plans to expand the mini-mart to a “maxi-mart”, which will mean the elimination of the repair shop.
The post provoked two dozen people to write in and share their experience of patronizing Inca Service. With … Continue reading »

It took the German Chancellor three days to get home from Berkeley
When German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the Lawrence Berkeley Lab last Thursday morning, she thought she would end the day by flying back home.
She didn’t reach Germany until Sunday.
Like millions of people, Merkel’s travel plans were disrupted by the huge cloud of volcanic ash that has spread across northern Europe. The ash cloud has forced the cancellation of all airplane flights, including those, it appears, of heads of state.
Merkel spent Thursday morning at the lab … Continue reading »
