UC Botanical Garden has a star on its hands after scientists discovered that one of its orchids is a distinct new species.

The Haitian orchid is a low-growing plant with showy red-orange flowers, and it has been in the garden’s collection since the 1990s, bearing the name Maxillaria croceorubens. Recent DNA analysis of flower and leaf material from the orchid confirmed that the plant is, in fact, named Ornithidium donaldeedodii, after orchidologist Donald Dod, who collected the specimen … Continue reading »

And they chronicle their expeditions and experiences — whether it’s bug hunting in Strawberry Creek or traveling in Japan — … Continue reading »

Rhubarb, often referred to as a pie plant — and really a vegetable — is just beginning to appear around town and in the farmers’ market. Long cultivated as a medicinal plant in Asia (thought to cure fevers and other ailments), the garden or culinary variety is probably best known for its use as a pie filling, sweet and savory, and as a classic pairing with strawberries. High in acid with a tart, bright flavor profile, think … Continue reading »

Software mogul Mitch Kapor can crack open the champagne. At last night’s City Council meeting Berkeley’s council members voted to reject the appeal on his approved application to the Zoning Application Board to build a new home in our city. His plan for a contemporary, 6,478 sq ft house at 2707 Rose Street now has the green light.

The item was passed 6 in favor, 2 against and one in absentia. Commenting on the long, divisive debate that preceded … Continue reading »
