Tennessee Reed, a poet and memoirist, grew up in Oakland and attended UC Berkeley. Reed, daughter of the novelist Ishmael Reed and the writer/choreographer Carla Blank, was diagnosed at an early age with several language-based learning disorders. She was never expected to read or write.

Despite this dire diagnosis, Reed not only went on to read and write, but published the first of her four books of poetry at the age of 11. She is also the author of … Continue reading »

Stealth knitters hold “T” party protest

Print Friendly

The stealth knitters who covered the “T” in the Here/There sculpture on the Berkeley-Oakland border held a T/tea party of sorts this weekend. They were protesting the city of Berkeley’s declaration that they must take down the tea cozy cover they put up over the “T,” changing the public art installation to read Here-Here. Sweet Adeline Bakery provided the desserts.

Read Berkeleyside’s earlier coverage of the stealth knitting project.

Berkeley’s car-free mayor

Bates walking
Print Friendly

“A little over a year ago I sold my beloved Volvo S80 T6 sedan — my 26th car — and set off on a new adventure: shrinking my already relatively small carbon footprint.” So reports Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates (above) in his latest newsletter. The fact that he can figure out exactly how many cars he has owned either indicates that he’s meticulous about keeping records or that he really did love his cars.

The car-free mayor is … Continue reading »

Safeway’s plan for Albany store meets resistance

Print Friendly

Safeway wants its customers to have a peak experience while shopping at its stores.

Trouble is, many neighborhood residents seem to be skeptical of the impacts those “enhanced” experiences will offer.

In recent years, Safeway has met tough resistance to its plans to transform its 1,710 stores into “lifestyle stores,” complete with in-hour bakeries, floral shops, pharmacies, delis,  and separate sections for meat and fish.

When Safeway announced plans to tear down its 1950s era store on Claremont and … Continue reading »

City of Berkeley sued over Mitch Kapor home

Print Friendly

A group of Berkeley residents has filed suit against the City of Berkeley for failing to act with due process when it approved the application, by Lotus founder and philanthropist Mitch Kapor, to build a new home at 2707 Rose Street.

The newly formed Berkeley Hillside Preservation group filed a petition in the Alameda Superior Court yesterday stating that the city had exempted the Kapor application from an environmental review that is mandated under the California Environmental … Continue reading »

Pick of the listings: A high-up Claremont house

Uplands3
Print Friendly

This is one of the nicest listed houses I have seen in a while in Berkeley. Of course, you would expect it to be pretty fine with a $1.695 million price tag.

Nevertheless, high prices don’t always equate to appealing homes, and there’s an awful lot to like with this five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home at 90 The Uplands. There’s also one thing not to like — a potential deal breaker in fact — but we’ll come to … Continue reading »
