gawd and i thought my kid was the only one who complained about berkeley moms and after he was three (yes, played under tables at the Med)we moved to mendocino county because i saw the light of the violence, terrible poverty, (versus creative poverty) and at three he said he didn't want to go to any more poetry readings, (that was my "job"=donations please). son also complains about knowing all the lyrics to dylan's songs up to "Under the Red Sky" without being asked first. sigh

THank you for a beautiful story which i intend to read to him over the phone, (the kind you have to dial...)
Peace, hell, yes. from Robin Rule, who still makes a ducat reading poetry

Thanks for the old memories and some good laughs. Glancing at Jane’s blog, I noticed that she’s not remained a 1960s wax museum figure herself, but has converted to Islam and written a book about her pilgrimage to Mecca. Not to take Jane’s musings too seriously, either then or now, I offer this paraphrase of the cliché about old soldiers:

Old Berkeley radical hippies never die, they just convert to radical Islam

Amen and thank you.
“My mom is so Berkeley that she still thinks that nonviolence is still the only answer.”
And right on.
