On the agenda: Berkeley City matters

Decisions, decisions. Highlights from the agenda for tonight’s City Council meeting:

Whether to restrict official travel to Arizona and cancel contracts with businesses there in reaction to that state’s recently passed law allowing police to question and detain people they think are in the U.S. illegally. Oakland, Richmond and San Francisco have already have passed measures aimed at cutting business ties with companies in Arizona.
Whether to continue the reconsideration of Berkeley Iceland (pictured) as a City of Berkeley landmark. Iceland’s owners are asking for a six-month continuation to consider proposals for the site.
Whether to increase the residential permit parking fees, following a Public Hearing, which would see annual permit increase 15% from $30.00 to 34.50 from July 1.
Whether to authorize payment to the City of Albany (in an amount not to exceed $86,552) to reimburse them for the construction, maintenance, and monitoring of an owl habitat project at the Albany Plateau as mitigation for the sports fields project at Gilman Street.

The opening of the hearing for Berkeley Iceland designation was continued for 6 months as was anticipated. I gave the Council an overview of a really cool plan which would restore the rink and provide new housing in a very Berkeley design for the site.
