A group of demonstrators has set up camp on Adeline Street near Russell Street in Berkeley to protest state budget cuts — and they are calling their encampment “Arnie Ville”.

One sign reads “We’re all crippled by the Gov. Terminator’s state budget cuts”.

Another calls on Governor Schwarzenegger to put a halt to cuts to in-home support services, social security income, Cal Works, General Assistance  and Medi-Cal.

Mark Schlissel didn’t know what hit him last week. The Dean of Biological Sciences at UC Berkeley says he was “swallowed up” by the media’s reaction to the news that the university planned to ask students to conduct a DNA test over the summer in lieu of the traditional summer reading assigment.

“We did not anticipate the response at all,” he said on Monday morning having weathered a week fielding calls from a broad range of media outlets, including … Continue reading »

We’ve been keeping an eye on the rotating exhibition of street art that appears on the side of the abandoned photo processing shack on the corner of Ashby and Telegraph.

Jesse Hazelip has had one of his signature buffalo-airplanes up there before. And now he’s back — this time he’s ditched the cool monochrome for a full-on rainbow-hue.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, along with council-members Linda Maio and Kriss Worthington, were pushed, fully clothed and voluntarily, into Willard swimming pool yesterday at a gathering to express their support of Measure C.

Measure C, which is on the June 8 ballot, aims to save Berkeley pools and, without it, Willard pool is slated for permanent closure on July 1.

Mark Twain’s true thoughts will soon be revealed

When Mark Twain died in 1910, he asked that his autobiographical writings not be released for 100 years.

Twain, who had become one of America’s most celebrated humorists, apparently had a lot of nasty things to say about the world. He spent the last six months of his life writing those thoughts down.

Some of those jottings included observations about Isabel Van Kleek Lyon, who became his secretary after the death of his wife Olivia in 1904. Twain … Continue reading »
