“A little over a year ago I sold my beloved Volvo S80 T6 sedan — my 26th car — and set off on a new adventure: shrinking my already relatively small carbon footprint.” So reports Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates (above) in his latest newsletter. The fact that he can figure out exactly how many cars he has owned either indicates that he’s meticulous about keeping records or that he really did love his cars.

Safeway’s plan for Albany store meets resistance

Safeway wants its customers to have a peak experience while shopping at its stores.

Trouble is, many neighborhood residents seem to be skeptical of the impacts those “enhanced” experiences will offer.

In recent years, Safeway has met tough resistance to its plans to transform its 1,710 stores into “lifestyle stores,” complete with in-hour bakeries, floral shops, pharmacies, delis,  and separate sections for meat and fish.

Tanya Henderson is a cooking instructor for the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD). During the day she cooks with teens at Willard Middle School. Once a week she whips up dishes with kids in the after-school program at Malcolm X Elementary. She also teaches evening nutrition classes to parents at several BUSD locations.

City of Berkeley sued over Mitch Kapor home

A group of Berkeley residents has filed suit against the City of Berkeley for failing to act with due process when it approved the application, by Lotus founder and philanthropist Mitch Kapor, to build a new home at 2707 Rose Street.
