    Chief Meehan,

This is distressing, especially to south Berkeley residents exhausted by summer street wars, with the Oakland injunction legally established on Wed please explain how BPD’s DTF will monitor and respond to loitering in the usual south Berkeley hotspots, this corner being one of them?

Please uphold our long fought for establishment of a reasonable streetside memorial policy and do not allow this corner to become a dangerous scene for retaliation.

What is the “streetside memorial policy” you are talking about Laura?

    James,

The policy limits the time a street memorial can remain on public property to less than 48 hrs. Of course the police chief and city manager can use their discretion and not allow non-permitted uses of public property when they determine the level of threat is an issue. Street side memorials are impromptu and violate city regulations since they do not get permits to host an event on the sidewalk.

Let’s not forgot that churches and homes are traditional places to grieve a death, and that folks can maintain an altar or so called memorial on their own property and be responsible for any activity that occurs.

In spring 2008 in Oakland at least 4 people were killed because of shootings at memorials, one was a young mother sleeping in her mother apt in a second floor apt.

Here in Berkeley, ironically right after the policy was amended to 48 hours down from two weeks, a mother was shot across the street by someone attending the memorial for Kelvin Davis on Derby St 2008.

Thanks Laura i was totally unaware of that.

I suppose I am not surprised but perhaps just a bit disappointed that there are not more comments on this post. I know that I don’t have much to add to the conversation but I think it deserves more attention, at least as more information comes out about it. It seems like on the rare posts here that involve violent crime in Berkeley the comments go kind of silent. I would just like to read some comments from intelligent, experienced, Berkeley locals here, instead of the kind I generally get to see from similar posts on the SFgate. Thanks.
