Terroir has come to tequila.

Forget that gut-wrenching cheap stuff that gives college binge drinkers dreadful hangovers. The new tequilas, those that are handcrafted from the blue agave plant, have distinct flavors that change with variations in the soil, weather, and processing.

Berkeley businessman Barry Augus is trying to take advantage of the growing demand for high-end spirits. Augus, the former president of Cabo Wabo Tequila, launched a new line of estate-bottled tequilas called Tres Agaves in January. … Continue reading »

Violence in southwest Berkeley neighborhood

Berkeley police are offering a $15,000 reward and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 for information leading to the capture of the killer of Kenneth Jerome Tims, Jr.

Tims was shot and killed around 6:30 pm Thursday, June 3 as he was walking along King Street near 62nd in southwest Berkeley. The slaying, Berkeley’s second homicide of the year, happened just a block away from where two people were shot in a car on May 20. … Continue reading »

Olive oil in lieu of bicycles on Domingo Avenue

An Oakland-based olive oil and balsamic vinegar company is set to take over the store being vacated by Left Coast Cyclery at 2928 Domingo Avenue in the Claremont neighborhood.

Amphora: The Berkeley Olive Oil Works will open by the end of July, says co-owner Michael Bradley, who, with his wife Veronica has been running olive oil company Veronica Foods since the late 1980s. (Veronica is the  grand-daughter of the founder of the business which was established in New York  in 1924.)

Where’s the road rage in Berkeley?

According to research cited by Rob Walker in his Consumed column in The New York Times Magazine, “drivers who put bumper stickers and other decorations on their vehicles are 16 percent more likely to engage in road rage” (the peer-reviewed research is behind a paywall here).

If there’s anything that characterizes cars in Berkeley, it’s a higher than usual quotient of bumper stickers.
