An eleventh hour attempt to save Willard Pool, at least for the summer, has been hatched by the head of a Berkeley neighborhood association and will be presented at tonight’s City Council meeting by councilmember Gordon Wozniak who supports the idea.

The proposal, conceived by George Beier, the President of the Willard Neighborhood Association, would see money diverted from subsidies currently given to city employees for membership of the YMCA. The city provides $230,000 a year to subsidize … Continue reading »

We also had no phone and no Internet. “Damn that Comcast,” I thought.

A call to Comcast revealed that they couldn’t see any signal going to our house. So they dispatched an engineer. When Corey Johnson showed … Continue reading »

Big Screen Berkeley: The Killer Inside Me

Kate Hudson and Casey Affleck

The knives are out for Michael Winterbottom’s latest film, The Killer Inside Me, which opens this coming Friday July 2 at the Shattuck Cinemas. An adaptation of hardboiled novelist Jim Thompson’s most famous work, Winterbottom’s film stands accused of looking kindly upon violence against women, and (worst of all) suggesting victims may be complicit in the crimes committed against them. If there’s blame to be apportioned, however, assign it to the source material– The Killer Inside Me is extremely faithful … Continue reading »
