Scuderi named new BHS principal

Pasquale Scuderi, BUSD Director of Human Resources, has been named principal of Berkeley High School in a unanimous decision of the school board. Board president Karen Hemphill announced the appointment at tonight’s board meeting.

Scuderi’s appointment comes after earlier stumbles when the initial search for a replacement for Jim Slemp failed to produce enough candidates to interview. Before he moved to run HR at the school district, Scuderi had been a vice-principal at BHS. A parent deeply involved in BHS described Scuderi as “personable, energetic and smart”.

Slemp was named principal in 2003. Before his tenure, BHS had run through five principals in five years.  Scuderi’s appointment means that the school will have a principal settled in place before the start of the school year in September.

Update Scuderi served as vice-principal of Academic Choice at BHS from 2006 to 2008. He’s a graduate of the Principal Leadership Institute at the University of California Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education. Outside work, Scuderi is apparently a huge baseball fan.

I am looking forward to a new school culture based on honesty and integrity.
I am looking forward to having our children and grandchildren back at the center – their education, their curriculum, their teachers. I’m so tired of all the politics and it doesn’t help our children.
Focus on the classroom with excellence for everyone and help for the children who need it.
Excellence and honesty. I hope that doesn’t sound impossible. It used to be so basic when I was a young mother.
