For dozens of years, there has been an informal code of conduct for casual carpooling: A driver stops, picks up two people — one who sits in the front, the other in the back — and drives across the Bay Bridge. Usually, the radio is turned to an NPR station.

If you walk or drive down Adeline Street in south Berkeley right now, you will see dozens of disabled people camping out on the median strip in the middle of the street. “We call this place Arnieville,” I was told. That, however, is not breaking news. This story has already been covered on TV.

Berkeley police identify man whom officers killed

Berkeley city police identified the man whom officers shot and killed on Monday night as Choung Van Nguyen, 25. Police do not know where he was living right before his death.

Nguyen was shot around 10:45 pm Monday after he had been involved in a hit and run car accident in Albany. Police there chased his Honda Accord into Berkeley, where Nguyen abandoned his car on San Pablo Avenue and ran a few blocks to 8th and and Camelia.

Robert Collier, co-chair of the Berkeley Pools Campaign, has analysed the results of the votes cast for and against Measure C, the failure of which led to yesterday’s closure of Willard Pool.
