Yarn bombers strike again on public art in Berkeley

The underground knitting activists have struck again, and this time their target is one of the pair of imposing sculptures on Berkeley’s  I-80 pedestrian overpass near University Avenue. The sculpture on the east side of the bridge now features a knitted cozy covering the book of the reader in the work of art.

Marijuana growing business could expand in Berkeley

Berkeley’s medical marijuana industry might greatly expand under two proposed ballot measures that the city council is on the way to placing on the November ballot.

Currently, there are three large-scale dispensaries in the city that provide medical cannabis to thousands of patients. The dispensaries are not permitted to grow or produce their own product, but must get it from small collectives or businessmen that grow it.

UC police investigating death of college student

UC Berkeley police are investigating the death of a Sacramento State University student who was found unconscious in the 2500 block of Haste Street around 9 am July 2.

Nicholas Bailey, 21, died at Highland Hospital on July 4, two days after he had been discovered lying on the street under a balcony, suffering from head trauma and abrasions around his hands, according to news reports. He was removed from life support after his organs were donated.

UC Berkeley appoints new chair of architecture

After conducting a search outside the university to fill the position, UC Berkeley has appointed Tom J. Buresh, Emil Lorch Collegiate Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, as chair of the College of Environmental Design’s Department of Architecture. His four-year term began on July 1.
