South branch library demolition opposed

The Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association is opposing the city’s plan to tear down and rebuild the South Berkeley Branch and Tool Lending Library.

BAHA sent a letter to the planning department on July 16 protesting the proposed demolition because the existing building on Russell Street, designed by architect John Hans Ostwald in 1961, is an “architecturally significant building and a very fine example of Mid-Century Modern architecture.”

New spate of arson fires in Berkeley

A week after Berkeley police arrested a man in connection with setting an arson fire on Telegraph, someone else has set two other small trash can fires, according to Berkeley police.

Police responded to a debris fire at 2915 Telegraph Avenue near Russell Street, at about 11:07 p.m. Monday, according to Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, spokeswoman for the Berkeley police department.  Flames were coming out of a blue recycling bin that had been stuffed with newspapers, she said.
