Beyond categorization

What is this?

Berkeleysider Eric Van Dusen sent us the photo to the left today. He had a slightly enigmatic challenge for our readers:

See how many Berkeleyside readers know where it is, its importance…

So have at it readers. Any suggestions?

All I remember about being there was Northside and darkness.

I believe it’s a new bypass for Fish Ranch Road to Highway 24 so they can build the 3rd bore to the Caldecott Tunnel.

  • Neal

I don’t think they need to relocate Fish Ranch Rd for the 4th Bore, construction of which is well underway on the Contra Costa County side.

    I vote for the reservoir…

  • David Mostardi

This is the reservoir opposite the Berkeley Rose Garden on Euclid, adjoining Codornices Park. It was originally an open lake, later covered over as were all the Berkeley reservoirs. I’ve heard that they’ll be installing a giant steel tank inside; there were story poles up before the excavation begun.

    Mostardi: That’d be Berryman Reservoir.

We once sold a home on Martin Luther King between Cedar and Vine … the disclosures indicated it was in a flood zone. My first thought was that it would have to be a flood of biblical proportions, turns out it referenced potential failure of the Berryman Reservoir up the hill.

According to the Alan Kropp & Associates, Inc. Berkeley Hills Landslide Map (Free Download) the Hayward Fault runs along the eastern edge of the Berryman Reservoir site.

I love reading maps – this one is particularly interesting ..

If you ever want to know the approximate location of the Hayward Fault, just connect Kensington Village on the Arlington, UC Stadium, and Highway 13. The fault line turns out to also roughly define the “walk to shops” boundary.

Neal nailed it immediately, and the link he provides has a nifty picture of what it is gonna look like, a graded and landscaped bowl around a single huge tank, with a funny double roof, and a new trellis to hide it. I thought the picture was significant because as Mostardi says, it was covered with a particularly ugly roof for just about as long as anyone can remember. For my kids and myself it was a refreshing re-imagining of the neighborhood geography.

The craftsman-like “roof” on the new tank will be a significant improvement, but still rather funky. See: http://www.ebmud.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/architectural_renderings.pdf
