Berkeley schools begin new year

Kindergarteners gather around their new teacher

By 8:15, the asphalt playing field of Emerson Elementary School in south Berkeley was filled with nervous kindergarteners, anxious (and happy) parents, and delighted kids, all gathered for an all-school rally before the first day of classes.

The kids lined up in rows according to their grades. The teachers stood in front of them, and camera-toting parents stood in the back.

Right after the new kindergarten students filed into their classrooms, the teachers led the students in a loud cheer, “E-M-E-R-S-O-N. What does that spell? Emerson!”

There are a lot of new faces at the helm of Berkeley schools this year. Here’s a handy guide to new principals and administrators.

We had a great first morning of school at Rosa Parks Elementary. It was really terrific to hear our new principal Paco Furlan welcome the children and adults in English and Spanish. I feel really grateful to be part of the Rosa Parks school community. Here’s to a terrific year for everyone.

It is my son’s first day at Emerson Elementary today (Kindergarten Green Group, thank you very much!)…wonder what he’s doing right now…proud and wistful mama, brave little boy. He didn’t so much as glance back when his class walked single-file into school. I am excited for his new adventure and very optimistic about the Emerson community. Berkeley schools are better than ever, I believe (this, coming from a Berkeley native who attended Berkeley public schools K-12)!

It was my youngest son’s first day as a Kindergartener at BAM. Happy to be there!

I haven’t been able to find any enrollment information. Anyone know how many students are in kindergarten at Berkeley Unified?
