Berkeley restaurateur is woman entrepreneur of 2010
Amanda West arrived in Berkeley just two years ago, but already she has become firmly embedded in the fabric of the city. And her achievements and positive impact have just been recognized with the designation “Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in Berkeley”, awarded by the Bay Area nonprofit Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment.
West opened Amanda’s Feel Good Fresh Food at 2122 Shattuck in the summer of 2008. The restaurant is devoted to making fast food as healthy as … Continue reading »
Understated style: tweeting the Chez Panisse way
Last month Chez Panisse succumbed to social media madness and joined Twitter. But, rather than bombard its already 2,431 followers with promotional messages or daily menu updates, the Alice Waters-owned restaurant is playing it cool and tweeting with the understated style we have come to expect from the team that works with Berkeley’s Slow Food queen.
Every few days a beautiful photograph will be shared — be it a mother and daughter enjoying a leisurely midday repast, … Continue reading »

Berkeley Bites: Kara Hammond, Elmwood Café
A decade ago, and fresh out of North Carolina, Kara Hammond landed a gig at Café Fanny, a tiny slip of a place in North Berkeley opened 25 years ago by, oh, a certain famous local chef.
Hammond, who had run a homespun bakery in Greensboro, wanted to get some kitchen experience in the Bay Area. Someone she knew knew someone who had a contact at Café Fanny; she called up and scored a job, just like that. Hammond … Continue reading »

A moment in time: French horn player on Ohlone
Berkeleysider Diana Howard was walking home from the Y yesterday on Ohlone Greenway when she spotted this “plein air” French horn player running through some tunes.
“It was near Hearst and McGee,” says Howard, a designer who keeps a notebook on her at all times for just such an opportunity to sketch on the hoof. “I’ve seen him before. He was just practicing. Some grandparents and their charges hung around to listen.”
In memoriam: Berkeley’s mountain lion
Some Berkeleyans, saddened by the mountain lion shot by police early Tuesday morning, have established an informal memorial to the animal at Shattuck and Cedar.
As Berkeleyside has reported previously, wildlife experts say that the Berkeley police had little choice but to shoot the animal. Tranquillizers are not readily available, even for Fish and Game patrols, and a tranquillized animal can become an even greater danger.
An open letter from Zara McDonald, executive director of the Continue reading »
