Daily Kos’s Markos Moulitsas to discuss radical right
Markos Moulitsas, the Berkeley-based founder of the progressive Daily Kos political website, is speaking tonight at 7 p.m. at Books Inc on Fourth Street about his new book, American Taliban (subtitle: “How war, sex, sin, and power bind Jihadists and the radical right”).
The book has had a mixed reception, even from some media that would normally be sympathetic to Moulitsas’ argument. Jamelle Bouie at The American Prospect had a particularly harsh review:

Berkeley Playhouse’s “Aladdin” goes on tour, a first
When the cast of Berkeley Playhouse’s “Aladdin” took their final bows yesterday at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts, it was meant to be the production’s final curtain call.
But, after an unexpected invitation from Gene Abravya at the Spreckels Performing Arts center in Rohnert Park some weeks ago, it turns out the lively musical is going on tour — a first for Berkeley Playhouse.

While neither artist would necessarily say their art reflects the city they call home, in both cases their work has been directly influenced by where they live and how they spend their time here.
For Belzer, it was a move west which, she says, had an impact … Continue reading »
Big Screen Berkeley: The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector
Phil Spector is a musical genius. He’s also an egomaniac who compares himself favorably to Michelangelo, Galileo and Da Vinci, a recluse with a penchant for firearms, and an inmate in Corcoran State Prison, where he’s currently serving a 19-to-life term for the 2003 murder of film actress Lana Clarkson. In The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector, a BBC documentary beginning a theatrical run at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater this Friday September 10 (there are no play-dates scheduled … Continue reading »
