Berkeley sketchbook: Time out on the way to school

Last week’s sketch of a French horn player by designer and Berkeley resident Diana Howard proved so popular, we have sought her permission to reproduce her wonderful drawings regularly.

Here we have a student on the way to school yesterday on Ohlone Greenway — but taking some time out, perhaps to check in with friends or play a swift game of Tetris on his mobile phone.

Just as economist Christy Romer is packing her bags in Washington to return to Berkeley, another star academic is making the move east. When West Berkeley’s Church Without Walls got a small grant from the San Francisco Foundation, the idea was to paint a mural. But when that project fell through, the church tried to give the $2,000 back. “Do something artsy in West Berkeley,” was the reply.

Berkeley Bites: Minh Tsai, Hodo Soy Beanery

Minh Tsai is on a mission to make tofu the next hip artisanal food. He knows he has a ways to go to get many Americans to even taste tofu, but if anyone can make it cool to eat bean curd, this enthusiastic self-described tofu master is the man for the job.

West Berkeley farmer seeks home for oil press

The West Berkeley urban farmer who asked the community to help him buy an olive oil press has raised enough money to install it.

Now he just needs to find the press a home.

Andy Dale, a computer security and privacy architect who also runs a small farming operation from his Seventh Street home, raised $2,670 through Kickstarter.com, a website that crowd-sources fundraising. That was $170 over his $2,500 goal.
