Berkeley sketchbook: Time out on the way to school
Last week’s sketch of a French horn player by designer and Berkeley resident Diana Howard proved so popular, we have sought her permission to reproduce her wonderful drawings regularly.
Here we have a student on the way to school yesterday on Ohlone Greenway — but taking some time out, perhaps to check in with friends or play a swift game of Tetris on his mobile phone.

UC Berkeley’s Dan Kammen takes World Bank post
Just as economist Christy Romer is packing her bags in Washington to return to Berkeley, another star academic is making the move east. Uncovering scraper bikes in West Berkeley
When West Berkeley’s Church Without Walls got a small grant from the San Francisco Foundation, the idea was to paint a mural. But when that project fell through, the church tried to give the $2,000 back. “Do something artsy in West Berkeley,” was the reply.

Tsai grew up eating fresh tofu from street vendors in his native Vietnam. He arrived in the U.S. via Malaysia, part of the so-called boat people exodus. Both … Continue reading »

West Berkeley farmer seeks home for oil press
The West Berkeley urban farmer who asked the community to help him buy an olive oil press has raised enough money to install it.
Now he just needs to find the press a home.
Andy Dale, a computer security and privacy architect who also runs a small farming operation from his Seventh Street home, raised $2,670 through Kickstarter.com, a website that crowd-sources fundraising. That was $170 over his $2,500 goal.
In August and September, 38 … Continue reading »
