Berkeley slaying victim was planning to marry

The 35 year old man who was shot and killed Sunday night while walking home from a party was a Chilean native who planned to marry his American fiancée next year.

Berkeley schools improve in statewide tests

For the fourth year in a row, schools in the Berkeley Unified School District showed improved results in California’s Academic Performance Index (API). API scores are calculated by the state Department of Education based on results in a variety of standardized tests across multiple subjects in grades 2 through 11.

It was a busy Friday for U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, but he found the time to make his way to an 8th grade algebra classroom at Longfellow Middle School.

On his stop in Berkeley, together with U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, he heard from students that “my teachers really care about me” and from teachers that “we have high expectations for all of our students”.

Berkeleyans of all faiths gather to read from Koran

On Saturday, the ninth anniversary of 9/11, a large group of Berkeleyans representing many faiths, as well as atheists, gathered in  Ohlone Park to read the Koran and make a peaceful stand against anti-Islam sentiment.

In the aftermath of the San Bruno gas explosion, many Berkeleyans may be wondering where the pipelines are located in our city.

Berkeleysider Alan Tobey uncovered the National Pipeline Mapping System, a government-run geographic information system created by the Department of Transportation, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Adminstration, and the Office of Pipeline Safety.

Addie’s Pizza Pie will open for business this week

After several hitches which postponed its opening, Addie’s Pizza Pie held its launch party yesterday evening and will open for business on Wednesday this week. The New York-style pizzeria, which is in the old Spud’s Pizza space at 3290 Adeline, is owned by Jennifer Millar, who runs Sweet Adeline Bakeshop a block down the street, and Thomas Schnetz of Doña TomásFlora and Tacubaya fame.

Out for a Stroll, with thousands of others

Thousands of Berkeleyans and other East Bayers turned out for a parade and a near-endless variety of music, entertainers, cause-related stalls and food at the 36th annual Solano Stroll yesterday.

The stroll kicked off with a parade, which meandered out of Fresno and Colusa Avenues just after 10 a.m. was headed by fire engines from Berkeley, Albany and Kensington. Close behind was an AC Transit zero-emission vehicle with Mayor Tom Bates and a host of cars with various local politicians.
