Berkeley kids get free school supplies

Asia Joyner, 9, was hanging out at the recreation center in San Pablo Park on Thursday evening when someone handed her a bulging canvas tote bag.

The fourth grader at Berkeley Arts Magnet looked inside and found some binders, a white board, crayons, colored pencils, and a few packs of binder paper. There were enough school supplies in the bag for a year, and they were Joyner’s to keep.

Beer Olympics, the organic way

I don’t usually associate farmers’ markets and beer contests, but that unlikely pairing will be featured at Civic Center Park tomorrow afternoon.

The Green Beer Olympics will be held during the Saturday Berkeley Farmers’ Market. The contest consists of three events: keg toss, hop sack race, and arm wrestling (by weight class). Entry is $10 and there are separate men’s and women’s competitions.

Crooner Eddie Fisher dies in Berkeley

Eddie Fisher, the 1950s singer whose career was overshadowed by his marriages to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, died in Berkeley on Wednesday, according to new reports.

Fisher, 82, died as a result of complications from hip surgery, his daughter Tricia Leigh Fisher, told the Associated Press.

When his other daughter, Carrie Fisher, was performing her one-woman play at Berkeley Rep, Wishful Drinking, Eddie Fisher could often be spotted in the audience.
