Former Defense Secretary to guest at film screening

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry will be the featured guest at a screening of the documentary The Nuclear Tipping Point at UC Berkeley on the afternoon of Thursday October 14.

The documentary, released earlier this year, centers on conversations with four men intimately involved in American diplomacy and national security over the last 40 years: Perry, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Sam Nunn, a former U.S. senator.

Free flu clinic in Berkeley on October 12

Last year Berkeley gave free flu shots to more than 2,600 people in its one-day free clinic, and this year the city expects to even give out more.

The plummeting economy means that many more people have lost their health insurance and will be turning to free clinics for their health care, according to Victoria Breckwich-Vásquez, a senior health services program specialist at the city of Berkeley Public Health Division.

This Sunday night, October 10, Don Reed, the comedian-playwright-producer behind East 14th — and a regular on HBO, Showtime and Comedy Central — will be performing at the Julia Morgan Theater as a fundraiser to support Leiomyosarcoma cancer research.

Reed will present two shows: “Stand Up” and “The Kipling Hotel: True Tales of the ’80s”.

This Sunday is 10/10/10, which has been declared a day of action on climate by the organization 350.org. The number 350 stands for 350 parts per million CO2, the number a wide consensus of climate scientists say the Earth must keep carbon concentration under to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
