Why does the street food scene bypass Berkeley?

At Berkeley’s Spice of Life Festival yesterday, for the first time in the event’s eight-year history, street carts were part of the mix. Jon’s Street EatsPrimo ParrillaChairman Bao and Skylite Snowballs were among the dozen or so street-food purveyors who signed up to join Gourmet Ghetto chefs and local D.I.Y. food artisans doling out morsels for the masses.

Normally, though, there’s a dearth of brightly colored food trucks roaming the streets of Berkeley, while Oakland, San Francisco and Emeryville have thriving street-eat scenes. A taco truck or two can usually be found in West Berkeley, a couple of food trucks work the Bancroft-Telegraph corridor near campus, and Cupkates makes a weekly appearance on 4th Street. That’s about it.

Red tape seems the biggest barrier to food trucks cruising city streets. Sidewalk cuisine purveyors say the cost and bureaucratic hassle of doing business in Berkeley make it less desirable to serve meals on wheels here than in other Bay Area locations.

Some point to the fact that the city is already saturated with brick-and-mortar joints, lacks a light industry customer base, and includes a significant student population unwilling to pony up much cash for food. … Continue reading »

School board candidates respond to key questions

Berkeleyside recently sent all the candidates for the School Board a set of questions, partly based on the suggestions our readers provided. Six candidates are running for three positions on the board: Josh Daniels, Norma Harrison, Karen Hemphill, Julie Holcomb, Priscilla Myrick and Leah Wilson. All except for Harrison responded to our questions. (If we hear from Harrison we will, of course, publish her responses.)

Berkeleyans who want to find out more about the school board candidates can attend a forum in the Community Theater at Berkeley High School tonight from 7 p.m. The forum is being held by the Berkeley High PTSA together with the League of Women Voters. The discussion will be moderated by BHS Principal Pasquale Scuderi and students from BHS Leadership.

These were our questions to the candidates:

  1. What do you think needs to be done about the achievement gap at Berkeley High?
  2. Do you think more charter schools should be allowed in Berkeley?
  3. What do you think can be achieved through the 2020 Vision process?
  4. What do you see as the most important issue today for Berkeley’s schools?

We didn’t give candidates a word count, but for those who asked, the answer was that space on the Internet isn’t limited, but readers’ attention spans are. We haven’t edited the responses in any way. We’ve listed the answers in alphabetical order of the candidates. Read the candidates’ answers below the fold. … Continue reading »

Mountain lion seen “sauntering” on Park Hills Road

Print Friendly

Following the Gourmet Ghetto mountain lion and the lion and cubs seen near LBL, Mark Rieffel reported the following sighting on the Park Hills neighborhood listserv:

This morning (Sunday) shortly before 9 AM my wife Jan drove south on the segment of Park Hills Rd between the island where it meets Woodside and the island where it ends at Shasta. As she was right by the last house on the right, a mountain lion sauntered across Park Hills Rd, just past … Continue reading »

Sports Basement, a discount sports store with four branches in the Bay Area, is taking over Berkeley Iceland, according to informed sources.

The retail store plans to cover the ice rink and set up displays of athletic shoes, skis, bikes, camping gear and other equipment.

Sports Basement chose the location because it is opposite some playing fields, much like its location across from Crissy Field in San Francisco.

The news comes as a disappointment … Continue reading »
