New shooting in Berkeley

The sound of sirens all over Berkeley right now is the sound of police on their way to another shooting, according to Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. Berkeleyside does not have any more details yet, but will post as we learn more.

Update 9:15 a.m.: A Berkeleysider writes in to say that there is a wounded person because of a gunshot on Sacramento and Russell.

Update 9:44 a.m.: Two people have been shot and wounded and taken to hospital.

I live a few blocks from there, and heard about a dozen gunshots an hour ago.

Thanks for the quick reporting. I was wondering why there are two helicopters circling the area.

Thanks to BS for the quick reporting!

I bike through this area all the time, and am starting to think that may not be the greatest idea. Maybe I’ll shift east a bit.

I heard the shots and saw about a dozen kids running down the sidewalk away from the sound of the shots. I hope no kids were injured. Thank you for reporting and please keep us up to date as you know more.

Yes, big thanks to BS for the quick reporting. I live a block from Sacramento/Russell, and my wife heard a lot of gunshots.

I was pulling onto Sacramento going east from Ward when it happened. I saw two young guys UNLOADING there pistols into a guy. I’m so glad I’m moving away this week.

Gee I wonder if this latest shooting is connected to the Johnston barbershop.

Johnston Barbershop was slated for public nuisance abatement years ago.
This is the ongoing failure of the city manager office willing to pander to city council members rather than enforce civil and criminal laws fairly in Berkeley. Same problem as Telegraph Ave currently. The police dept has repeatedly collected and provided sufficient evidence for public nuisance proceedings but code enforcement dept neglected despite the endless gun battles.

Happened two blocks from my house. Really it was no surprise, there are armed gangs marauding the neighborhood on a regular basis. There have been 4 reported armed robberies in front of my house in the last year and no arrests. My housemate was robbed in our yard at 9 in the evening!

The only time we see the police is when they are down here writing tickets. The city does not even recognize that we may be offended by this. I guess there is no revenue in tracking down killers and robbers.

I’ve called our community officer multiple times, but can’t get a return call.

If they won’t allow this stuff in the hills, why do they allow it here? And will they act surprised when we start dealing with this our selves?

Thanks for reporting this. I haven’t owned a car since 1995, am a Berkeley resident since 2006, an avid walker, and am starting to feel really “hemmed in” these days – the area in which I feel safe (especially before dark) is increasingly contracting. Not good.

It is the barbershop, it happened right outside. There was another shooting there about 6 months ago. I heard it was young teens running away with black hoods over their heads, not sure, that is what a man who lives nearby told me, as I walked by.

I just moved here, so please pardon my ignorance, but what is the deal with the barbershop? I don’t usually associate barbershops with homicide or crime.

Important correction, in this incident BPD youth services Sgt Lewis did notify Longfellow immediately. I know this because I have been pushing for this practice for years.

Second important issue, anyone who has been witnessing the street wars for years can see today there is large groups of angry friends of Gary jr out and about. The last thing we need is a streetside memorial tonight.
    This feud is hot.
