Election 2010: liveblogging the results
1:35 a.m. If any benighted souls are still with me, thanks. In the final stretch I know I didn’t maintain the usual standard of being consistent with the number of significant figures in percentages, but I hope readers will excuse that. Also, thanks for the many supportive comments that you posted this evening. We’re really determined to keep pushing ahead with an ever-better Berkeleyside. Later today, we’ll try to see if there’s deeper meaning to any of these votes. Good … Continue reading »

There are plenty of places for you to watch, listen or surf national or even state election results tonight. But we’re determined that Berkeleyside provides the most timely, comprehensive coverage of our local elections.

Join the Dia de los Muertos procession tonight
The annual Dia de los Muertos celebration in the Gourmet Ghetto takes place this evening (see Ira Serkes‘ video from last year above to get a taste of what you’ll experience). A community altar to fallen bicyclists will be made from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the corner of Shattuck and Cedar, with community additions welcomed. A bicycle and costume contest for adults will be held at 7:30 p.m. Finally, the candlelight procession will start at 7:45 … Continue reading »

Apparently there was a baseball game last night
Leah Shellada’s photo from Halloween celebrations on Mariposa Street seemed the right way to mark the Giants’ first World Series championship since 1954 (disclosure: my mother used to sneak into games at the Polo Grounds when she should have been going to school).
Memorial to 5-year old revived
After the one-year anniversary of the death of five-year old Zachary Michael Cruz, who was hit by a car while crossing Warring Street at Derby in February 2009, the impromptu memorial to him went moribund.
During the year leading up to the anniversary, family members and friends had been placing bouquets, balloons, toys, and photos at a stop sign at that corner. It was a touching reminder of a life cut short, and served as a warning for motorists … Continue reading »

The boy, who is a freshman in the Academic Choice program at Berkeley High School, underwent surgery Saturday night to remove bullets a bullet from his head, according to sources at the high school.
The 14-year old was shot around 3:26 pm Oct. 30 in the Alcatraz Avenue apartment of his … Continue reading »
Go out and vote
If the lack of activity at my polling place is any indication, Berkeleyans need every encouragement to go out to vote today. The polls are open until 8 p.m. tonight. If you don’t know where your polling place is located, the Registrar of Voters has a handy lookup page on its website.
When you do go to vote, you’ll encounter a considerably more complicated ballot than the image above. You’ll have three ballots: one for state and … Continue reading »

Where’s My DVD?: Uncle Silas
This week, Berkeleyside’s film writer John Seal looks at a movie he recommends you check out on DVD.
Published in 1864, Irish-born writer Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Uncle Silas” was the first Gothic novel of the Victorian era. Thirty-three years later, however, the world was introduced to Count Dracula, and from that day to this his works have taken a backseat to those of fellow Dubliner Bram Stoker.
Though Le Fanu’s novella Carmilla would spawn a thousand lesbian vampires, … Continue reading »
