Resolution on WikiLeaks private “premature”

At the moment, there are 308 stories on Google News about Berkeley’s Peace & Justice Commission’s proposal to “support and free Pfc Bradley Manning and proclaim him a hero”. They range from the outraged (“Berkeley Gives America the Middle Finger” on Fox) to the more measured (“GI’s supporters still awaiting WikiLeaks donation” on the Washington Post).

Manning is being held in the brig at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, on charges of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks and … Continue reading »

By Eric Klein

At last night’s City Council meeting, council members voted for a city-wide parking holiday to spur Christmas shopping on Saturday, December 18 and Friday, December 24. All metered spaces will be free, and no parking tickets will be given for those metered spaces.

City Manager Phil Kamlarz strongly advised the council against the plan, warning that the parking holiday would be a logistical nightmare for staff, but in the end the drive to throw a bone to Berkeley’s … Continue reading »

When we wrote about SantaCon the other day, we didn’t know that the most startling participating Santa was a Berkeleyan.

Although the photo above seems like it must be digitally altered, Brody made the gray Santa suit and then found make-up that would match her skin color to the suit.

You can find the … Continue reading »

A bare-bones approach to store design at the Pop Up Shop

At a time when there’s understandable angst about stores closing and vacant retail spaces, perhaps Berkeley can expect more ventures like the Pop Up Shop. It opened on November 12 and will close on December 24 in Gilman Village on 10th Street in North Berkeley. The store sells an eclectic range of items, many sourced from France. (And it provides an excuse to direct readers to the astonishing story of the young Dane who was the likely inspiration for Tintin.)

Where in Berkeley?

Where in Berkeley?

Know where this is? Take a guess and let us know in the comments.

Update, 15.07: Six hours after posting the photo, Berkeleysider Peter correctly guessed that this is a shot of the building at the corner of Shattuck and Rose. Here is the map location.

Congratulations, Peter, on being this week’s winner. It was a tough one.

Berkeley “Street” named for young boy killed by car

A new memorial for Zachary Cruz
Print Friendly

Berkeleyside has been following the evolution of the stop sign at the corner of Derby and Warring, where 5-year old Zachary Michael Cruz was killed Feb. 27, 2009 while crossing the street. It was a terrible tragedy, one that continues to play out at the stop sign that has become a defacto memorial.

In the year following Cruz’s death, the the stop sign was continually decorated with notes and flowers. Then it became moribund. Then in early November, the … Continue reading »
