A holiday greeting to the new Apple store

Well, we know Berkeley city officials are happy that Apple is opening a store on Fourth Street. They can’t wait to see some of that sales tax revenue. Other people are apparently excited as well. Kate Harper, a Berkeley artist who licenses greeting cards, and the Art Licensing Group, which has an office near the future store, made this holiday greeting card for Apple. They set their own lyrics to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” (Harper is the singer with the pink hair.)

City tackles proliferation of cell phone equipment

Montrose pole

Lisa Goodman barely registered the rolled-up paper tucked into her door handle on the day before Thanksgiving — promotional flyers of that sort are ubiquitous in the city, after all. But she was alarmed when she read the missive. Addressed to the home-owner, the letter said that construction was slated to begin the following Monday so that T-Mobile could add equipment and wireless antenna to the pole opposite her home on Montrose Road in north Berkeley.

“We tried contacting the City of … Continue reading »

The proposal from Berkeley City’s Peace & Justice Commission to honor Pfc. Bradley Manning for his purported role in the WikiLeaks saga has unleashed a predictable storm of criticism for Berkeley nationally. In Berkeley, there are certainly supporters as well as opponents of the resolution, which will come before the City Council next Tuesday.

What is coming across in the comments to our story on the resolution, however, is puzzlement about the role of the Peace & Justice … Continue reading »

What next for the Multi Culti Grill and Birdland Jazz club?

So Berkeley finally gets a not-so-secret supper club, a down-home version of guerrilla gourmet hipster hangouts in Oakland and San Francisco, but now its future is uncertain.

At press time, the Multi Culti Grill and Birdland Jazz, the city’s only underground BBQ and jazz joint is retreating from its street-front presence in North Berkeley and morphing into the more clandestine Birdland Jazzista Social Club. This, says its founder, is to circumvent city action to shut down the nascent nightclub for code violations – including a lack of a special-event permit.

For those not in the know, the spontaneous community chow and music spot has been a happening Friday night attraction in a converted garage for seven months now.

The brainchild of artist Michael Parayno, better known as the Bird Man for his one-of-a-kind rustic birdhouse creations made from recycled materials, the grill-and-groove venue has been bringing a little cultural nightlife to an otherwise sleepy stretch of Sacramento Street opposite the North Berkeley BART station. … Continue reading »

It once was the home of prominent Berkeleyan John Hinkel and neighbor to a historic all-girls’ school. Then it was a parking lot. Now the parcel of land facing People’s Park just east of Telegraph between Haste and Channing will become UC Berkeley’s newest residence hall.

Construction began in September on a $70 million, 424-bed, four to six story housing complex. When it opens in the fall of 2012, the building will house 160 sophomores and another 224 upper level … Continue reading »
