What did you think of the Peace & Justice Commission?
As the City Council tonight considers the Peace & Justice Commission’s resolution to declare Pfc. Bradley Manning a hero, its members might also want to reflect on the poll we conducted on Berkeleyside about the commission itself.
We asked whether the Peace & Justice Commission has a valuable role for Berkeley. The poll isn’t scientific: readers self-select to answer and it’s vulnerable — should someone care enough — to organized blocs of voters. So take the result with a … Continue reading »

Birdland Jazz and Multi Culti Grill: Update
Many Berkeleyside readers have weighed in on the fate of the Multi Culti Grill and Birdland Jazz evenings hosted by Michael Parayno out of his garage at 1733 Sacramento Street, across from North Berkeley BART.
Here’s an update:
Last Thursday, December 8, Parayno received a Notice of Violation from the Code Enforcement Unit of the Office of the City Manager.
The document lists eight code violations, including a lack of a special-event permit, loud and unruly gatherings which … Continue reading »
Downtown’s new fountain — today only
Berkeleysider Steve McConnell reports:
A wayward motorist apparently decapitated a fire hydrant this morning at the northeast corner of Shattuck and Center, resulting in a temporary geyser on an already drizzly morning. Berkeley police and firefighters responded quickly, with three firefighters huddling beneath a tarp next to the 30+-foot gusher to shut off the flow shortly before 9:00, to the applause of downtown pedestrians and bus-stop onlookers.
Berkeley bashing: A favorite national sport
The proposal of the Peace and Justice Commission to name Private Bradley Manning a hero for leaking sensitive U.S. government documents has provided much of the world an opportunity to bash Berkeley.
In the six days since word came out that the City Council would vote on the WikiLeaks matter, there have been hundreds of news articles, tweets, and television reports on the subject.
And the words aren’t pretty.
“I have had it with Berkeley, California, that anti-American bastion … Continue reading »
Where’s my DVD?: Strangers in the City
This week, Berkeleyside’s film writer John Seal looks at a movie he recommends you check out on DVD.
In May 2009, Turner Classic Movies aired a bi-weekly, primetime series entitled “Latino Images in Film”, showcasing 40 films focused on the Chicano-American experience and Latino cinematic representations. Selections ranged from such well-known classics as Herbert Biberman’s Salt of the Earth (1954) and John Sayles’ Lone Star (1996), to exploitation fare such as Walk Proud and Boulevard Nights (both 1979), each … Continue reading »
Citizens’ sunshine law to go on 2012 ballot
After 10 years of discussion and 24 draft ordinances, the residents of Berkeley will soon be able to vote on a new open records law.
On Tuesday December 14, the Berkeley City Council will vote to place the “Berkeley Sunshine Ordinance,” a citizens’ proposal to make Berkeley city government more transparent, on the November 2012 ballot.
The open records ordinance contains a slew of provisions that would give residents greater insight into … Continue reading »
