It was 10 am in the morning of February 17th and Jesus Mendez was just returning from the bank when he felt someone press the cold nub of a pistol into his back.

“Give me the money,” a second man said as he stepped in front of Mendez and leveled another gun at him.

Mendez, 48, the owner of Mi Tierra Foods on San Pablo Avenue and Addison, handed over the brown duffle bag containing the $30,000 in cash he had just withdrawn to run his store’s check cashing operation. The two assailants grabbed the bag and fled.

“It all happened so quickly,” Mendez said Tuesday sitting in the back office of his store. “It was very suspicious the way it happened. I went to the bank, came back, and as soon as I got out of my truck they came out of nowhere. How did they know I had so much money? Were they watching me?  Was it someone who came and cashed checks?” … Continue reading »

Apparently the young man, who is a student at B-Tech, was intending to settle a score over a incident … Continue reading »

Last week Jefferson Elementary School first grade teacher Beth Trevor was doubly honored. Firstly by the 826 Valencia Foundation which made her the recipient of its Teacher of the Month award. And secondly on the occasion of the Berkeley Unified School District board meeting when four of her pupils took the mic to tell board members just why they thought their teacher deserved such an award.

826 Valencia was founded in 2002 by San Francisco author Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari to support students with their writing skills, and to help teachers get their students excited about the writing. … Continue reading »

Quick — name all the Doctor Seuss film adaptations you’d gladly watch more than once. The list is, of course, very short: in fact, unless you’re an easily pleased eight-year old, there’s only one, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.

This musical fantasy classic screens at 3:10pm on Wednesday March 2 at Pacific Film Archive as part of the undergraduate course, Film 50. Tickets will be available to the public as space permits.

Directed by the otherwise forgotten (and, truth … Continue reading »
