On Day of Action, protesters on campus, Bank of America
Groups of students have been gathering on the UC Berkeley campus today to voice their opposition to education budget cuts, in what is being billed a Day of Action for Public Education.
The Daily Californian reported that at 1pm a rally of about 100 people at Sproul Hall turned into a march through Sather Gate, heading to California Hall with protesters chanting: “We will march, we will fight, education is our right.” Follow the progress of the protests on … Continue reading »

Berkeley in bloom: Shadow play and winter silhouettes
When I was a young man (9th grade) falling in love with nature and in particular with trees, I was struck by a passage in The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins was walking through a forest and he observed: “Never before have I become so suddenly and so keenly aware of a tree’s skin, neither as a forester nor as a carpenter but in the delight of the living tree itself”. Winter is the best time to select a specimen tree for your garden as you get the opportunity to see the naked tree in its true form.
These photographs with extended captions were all taken locally as I make my way through each day noting and observing the beautiful, often architectural shapes and forms created by nature.

A witness told police what the suspect looked like and, since thieves often use credit cards at ATMs and gas stations shortly after stealing them, officers … Continue reading »

Berkeley Rep audiences give Mike Daisey some cash
At the end of every performance of “The Last Cargo Cult” at Berkeley Rep, monologist Mike Daisey invited the audience to return to him some of the cash that had been handed out at the beginning of the show.
As members of the audience had walked in, they had been handed crisp $1, $5, $10, $20 or $100 bills.
The money represented what Berkeley Rep had paid him for each performance. Daisey challenged the audience to decide how much his show was worth. They were informed they could keep the money, give it back, or even add a little extra. … Continue reading »
