Berkeleyside on the news — and in the news
Berkeleyside co-founder Lance Knobel was a guest on KALX’s Soapbox Derby Thursday night. Lance was interviewed by host Lars Skjerping. They discussed the state of local news in Berkeley, the role of online news sites, and Berkeleyside — its progress so far and its goals for the future.
The pair also talked about Berkeleyside’s new-year “10 Berkeley Resolutions” — which included hoped-for improvements to the city’s public education system, and enhanced conditions for business start-ups.
The Berkeley Fire Department was called out to Berkeley High School this morning at around 10am after someone set fire to a bulletin board.
BFD Assistant Chief Sabina Imrie said when firefighters arrived at the school they found a bulletin board on fire in the Administrative Building. “This was a small fire that self-extinguished once the papers burned. However, this small fire did generate enough heat to activate one sprinkler head. It is still unknown who or how this fire was started,” she said. Imrie added that the damage caused was minor. … Continue reading »
Did it snow after all in the hills of Berkeley?
What was this snowy mountain we saw in our rear-view mirror yesterday as we drove in an easterly direction down Derby Street? In fact, it was a rather magnificent, low-lying cloud formation above the Berkeley-Oakland hills above Claremont Canyon.
Did anyone manage to snap some better photographs than the one above?
Urban farmer Willow Rosenthal plants seeds in Berkeley
The aptly named Willow Rosenthal grew up around trees in Sonoma County in a community that farmed its own food. Raised by hippies who didn’t have a lot of money, she nonetheless ate well. She also learned how to grow her own food by working on an organic farm and for a local nursery.
She came to the Bay Area in 1997 knowing she wanted to do social-justice work; an internship with Food First and volunteering with the Organic Consumers Association followed.
When she moved to West Oakland, Rosenthal was immediately struck by the absence of greenery, how much vacant, unused land there was, and the lack of grocery stores. She had landed in a community bounded by three major freeways that is also home to a busy port and extensive industrial pollution. People in this predominantly low-income, African American and Latino neighborhood had nowhere close by to buy healthy, affordable food. The area had plenty of corner liquor stores and fast-food joints, but not a single full-service supermarket. … Continue reading »
Students released after dramatic campus protests
By Jake Schoneker
Eight student protestors armed with PVC pipes, carabiners and Depend diapers, who had chained themselves to a fourth floor ledge of Wheeler Hall, came down and emerged from the building at about 9.30 p.m. yesterday after a long day of demonstrations.
All told, the UC Police were occupied for more than seven hours dealing with the protestors, and news helicopters hovered noisily over the city for several hours last night. … Continue reading »
Three Berkeley sites proposed for new LBL campus
When officials from Berkeley Lab open proposals for a second campus today, there will be three Berkeley-based offers: one at Golden Gate Fields, and two separate projects near Aquatic Park, according to informed sources who asked not to be named.
The fact that there are three sites proposed in Berkeley may give the city a good shot at snaring the Lab’s expansion, since it is more than any other city is offering. Alameda, Emeryville, Dublin, Oakland, Walnut Creek, Albany and Richmond are also vying to grab the second campus, which is expected to generate thousands of jobs in the coming years. … Continue reading »
