Open near campus: Pepe’s Pizza for hungry folk

At Pepe’s Pizza, which opened at 2516 Durant Avenue near Telegraph on March 10, you can pay $6.99 and eat all you want from the pizza buffet.

That means, if you’re appetite is up for it, you can knock back salad, soup, pizza, pasta, soft drinks, and ice cream — and finish, perhaps, with one of their chocolate dessert pizzas.

What poor, starving student will be able to resist?

I grew up in Memphis. The daily paper there was called, frankly enough, the Commercial Appeal.

Perhaps the same students who have resisted consistently supporting any business in that location for the past eight years. (Well, not exactly the same students.)

Seems like a promising business model for Southside, if they can maintain decent standards of quality and service. I wish them well, but the Yelp reviews so far are decidedly mixed.

It’s a real bummer that the previous buffet there closed right before I learned about it. One thing I dislike about Berkeley’s restaurants is the lack of locations for quality dim-sum.

So far most of the complaints on Yelp seem to be about lines & waiting for food.
It sounds interesting and I like cheap buffets, so I’ll definitely swing by to try it out in a week or two once they’ve got some of the logistics worked out.

@ phhht — Information about newly opened businesses is news, ESPECIALLY in the middle of a recession.

Are there really Cal students who are starving?

Do these students thank god there is an “all you can eat” pizza buffet? Were they on the verge of absolute collapse, then saw for 7 bucks their agony would be overcome?

Also, everyone like pizza, and everyone really likes cheap pizza. So why would the student population be singled out? There is more to Berkeley than Cal students; it’s an actual city, not an amusement park built for college students.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would think that Cal students were singled out because it is located within spitting distance of the campus, dozens of Cal student hangouts, and several enormous dorm buildings containing thousands of Cal students.

    But I could be wrong…

“Pepe’s Pizza?” Shades of the Ave in the 60′s.
Plus the building that previously occupied this site was the source of much of the ammunition launched by “The People” during the People’s Park riots (Ver. 1.0)

Isn’t Pepe’s located were LaVals use to be?
