Saturday Night Live fans attuned to all matters Berkeley (such as the teenage offspring of two Berkeleyside founders) may have spotted that, on last week’s episode, homegrown comedian Andy Samberg was sporting a particularly Berkeley-relevant T-shirt.

At the end of the March 12 show, as the cast was milling around with guest host Zach Galifianakis and singer Jessie J, Samberg could be seen wearing a green T-shirt bearing the image of a bear with the words “John Muir Grizzlies”.

Berkeley High students produce independent theater

Misha Brooks and Mimi Kaplan in their ITP gear

When Mimi Kaplan moved from Portland to the Bay Area right before starting Berkeley High School, she was apprehensive about fitting in.

But within a few weeks she had found her group: the diverse and talented theater community.

Now, as Kaplan prepares to leave high school to attend a joint degree program at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, she is directing a play that could serve as a metaphor for her time at Berkeley. It’s called Necropolis, and it tells the story of a Bosnian sniper and American journalist who talk about their clashing ideologies.

“It really struck me when I read it,” said Kaplan, who is a senior in BHS’ International High School. “It’s really powerful. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for the next few days. It kept coming back to me.” … Continue reading »

A motorist who ran a red light at the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and Dwight Way this morning struck a school bus with four students inside.

None of the students on Bus 25 were injured and were delivered safely to Oxford Elementary School in time for class, according to Mark Coplan, a spokesman for the Berkeley Unified School District.

The accident happened at 7:30 am, said Coplan. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene and are investigating, he said.

Nick Christopher moved out West in the early 90s, drawn to the punk-rock scene here he toured with a band and hung out with Green Day.

These days Christopher spends more time thinking about perfect produce than the perfect tune, as an organic produce buyer for Berkeley Bowl. He started at the Bowl as a dishwasher, and quickly worked his way through various departments, including the deli and bulk section, before rising to supervisor status.

Owner Glenn Yasuda personally trained Christopher in the fine art of selecting fruits and vegetables. The Bowl has a reputation for its large and extensive produce selection, including exotic finds like durian, carambola (star fruit) and horned melon. … Continue reading »

Jason Lustig, the Principal of Martin Luther King Middle School, is to leave his post at the end of this academic year, after four years in the job, in order to pursue an academic course at Harvard.

Lustig, a Berkeley native, came to King from Cragmont Elementary School where he was also principal. He is popular in the King community where he is known, among other things, for his extensive collection of ties, some of which have been hand-made for him by students.

“Jason has been a great asset to our schools,” says BUSD Superintendent Bill Huyett. “I really appreciate the way he balances excellent academic standards with his abilities as a very conscientious leader. He has great relationships with staff and the community.” … Continue reading »

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory received a fourth Berkeley proposal for a new campus – the old Marchant Building on San Pablo Avenue near Ashby Avenue.

Redico, a Michigan-based real-estate development company, suggested to the lab that the 540,000 square foot building on a 6.5 acre plot of land become its new second campus, according to a knowledgeable source who asked not to be named.

The Marchant Building, which was used by the University of California as a storage facility for 28 years, straddles Berkeley, Emeryville and Oakland. The university vacated the building in 2010 and Redico has been promoting it since then as prime R&D and office space for the East Bay Green Corridor. … Continue reading »
