Update on incident which resulted in shooting of pet dog
The police responded by sending a Supervisor and five BPD Officers to the 3200 block of Shattuck due, the statement reads, “to the serious nature of the call”.
The statement continues:
“Officers were able to contact three men inside who complied with the officers’ directions to come out of the house one at a time with their hands up. They were detained outside.
“During the process, a pit-bull dog came out of the residence. The dog refused to comply with the verbal commands issued by one of the occupants who was familiar with the dog. The dog began growling, running about the officers then eventually crouched and was starting to leap at one of the officers. This officer felt that the dog posed an immediate threat to his safety so he fired one round from his pistol at the dog and it died instantly. Due to the speed at which these events happened, the officer(s) had no other viable options. … Continue reading »

Berkeleyside has been keeping tabs on the street art that pops up on the old photo shop at the corner of Ashby and Telegraph. It’s a constantly evolving canvas — to the extent that, since this photo was taken by kukkurovaca, and submitted to the Berkeleyside Flickr pool, that bounding deer (if that is what it is) has already disappeared.

But, starting in May, Walls will have to ride to a different post office. The Postal Service announced on Monday that the Park Station at Sacramento and Russell Streets would close on April 30. All the post office boxes and will be transferred to a post office, Station A, on San Pablo Avenue near Addison.
The news came as a blow to nearby residents who have been trying to stave off this possibility. Ever since the Postal Service put the Park Station on a closure list in the fall of 2009, those living on the south side of town have worked to keep it open. They circulated a petition, wrote letters to the Postmaster General, and met with Congresswoman Barbara Lee to plead their case. … Continue reading »
“Mostly I just make cups”: Artist highlights impact of war
By Susan Anglin
Berkeley ceramicist Ehren Tool is less concerned with our position on war, than with making sure that all non-veterans are made very aware of its consequences.
Tool’s vehicle for achieving this end are the thousands upon thousands of clay cups he has thrown, decorated and fired over more than a decade.
Tool has experienced war first-hand. He served as a Marine during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991, leaving the Corps in 1994.
His art … Continue reading »
