Street art: Now you see it, now you don’t

Graffiti and pigeons by kukkurovaca

Berkeleyside has been keeping tabs on the street art that pops up on the old photo shop at the corner of Ashby and Telegraph. It’s a constantly evolving canvas — to the extent that, since this photo was taken by kukkurovaca, and submitted to the Berkeleyside Flickr pool, that bounding deer (if that is what it is) has already disappeared.

Interesting work. As someone who used to do street art by hand, I’m not a huge fan of the wheatpasted photocopies and stencils that people like Banksy & Shepard Fairey are doing these days, but this deer is nice.

Based on the way the back legs are splayed with the pelvis facing upwards and the indication of a ribcage in the torso, I think this is supposed to be a road-killed deer, or at least a decaying deer corpse.

Thanks, I love this little ‘story’. I had been only vaguely aware that the art on this spot changes all the time. It was something like a ephemeral, almost-unconscious awareness. I knew something always seemed different but I would shake it off, cause I wouldn’t remember what had gone before. I kinda liked the mystery and I kinda like it now that the mystery is gone cause it is still a mystery. What will be there next time I look?

    Thanks, Berkeleyside.

Hey yall! I’m responsible for the deer (it’s screen printed in 4 sections)… I appreciate the nice words! The day after I put it up I walked by and saw a young girl standing in front of it repeating “No, why is it dead!” …gonna go for something a little less harsh next time.
