Berkeleyside yesterday reported on the financial difficulties that seem to be besetting Andronico’s, which has four supermarkets in Berkeley. Today, the family-owned company sent Berkeleyside a statement written by CEO Bill Andronico, announcing plans to recapitalize the company:
As with other small family companies, Andronico’s continues to operate with many business challenges on a daily basis. The economic climate of the past several years has also contributed to these difficulties. Andronico’s has been a closely held, family business since it began in 1929 and we are dedicated as always to insure our commitments to our vendors, employees and communities are met. We are working on a plan to recapitalize the Company that brings in lending/investor partners to replace the existing lender group and, additionally, provides growth capital. Andronico’s looks forward to being a part of our community for another 80 years and more. We thank our vendor and staff network for their continued support.
Berkeley loses money as cannabis commission idles
Six months after voters approved new laws to expand Berkeley’s medical marijuana trade – in the hopes of bringing more money to city coffers – a new commission to oversee the process has not been seated.
While six city council members have appointed members to a new medical marijuana commission — enough for a quorum – the group won’t meet until all nine members are in place, according to Wendy Cosin, deputy city planner, who sent out an email last week stating there would not be a meeting in May. That way all the members can have a voice in selecting a chair, she said. … Continue reading »
Willard captures middle school baseball championship
Willard Middle School’s baseball team defeated the Montera Toros 8-6 yesterday afternoon to win the middle school league title. The win took the Phoenix’s season record to 9-1. According to athletic director, Josh Church, that marks the best record since the mid-90s for the squad.
Church reports:
The game provided many highlights — a second successful, perfect bunt by Eli Williams, solid hitting by Gerardo Barron, Bowen Johnson and the Schmidt brothers, great fielding by infielders Jayson Summers … Continue reading »
Sustainable, stylish, affirming: Berkeley’s Teen Center
“This isn’t a building for long-time Berkeleyans to reminisce about the Free Speech Movement or the history of Chez Panisse. It’s for a segment of the population that too often is viewed as a nuisance and threat — and in a location that by its visibility affirms that teenagers belong to our society as a whole.”
So writes John King in the Chronicle today, reviewing the recently opened YMCA PG&E Teen Center for his weekly “Place” … Continue reading »

An all-white garden: serene, simple, sophisticated
By Robert Trachtenberg
Writing this column has been a real thrill for me, as I am now cruising around Berkeley on high alert in search of anything that is spectacular in the world of plants.
I start and end many of days with my camera in hand hoping to come across something special that I can share with my fellow Berkeleysiders. In a world filled with bad news, who could ask for a task any more exhilarating than this?
Where in Berkeley?
Know where this is? Take a guess and let us know in the Comments.
Update: 9:10am: Berkeleysider Scott came in with the correct answer less than two hours after our photo appeared. The overgrown window is on the building at the corner of Webster and Dana near Telegraph. Here’s the Google Street View. Congratulations, Scott, on being this week’s winner!
