A Banksy sighting in Berkeley? We think not
It isn’t the first time we have been sent photos of an image on a wall with the claim that it was done by celebrity British street artist Banksy — and it probably won’t be the last.
We are skeptical this piece — which is in the empty lot at the cornor of University and McGee Avenues – has anything to do with Banksy, not least because it lacks his original sense of wit.
Nevertheless we would like to be proved … Continue reading »

The culinary couple behind Berkeley’s Corso and Rivoli
This is a story about a little neighborhood restaurant opened in 1994 — a shared vision between two partners in work and life, who built an acclaimed destination dining space serving up fresh, homey food with complex flavors and nods to Italian, French, and Californian cuisine.
And it’s the story of how this culinary couple followed the success of their first eatery by opening an authentic Tuscan trattoria nearby three years ago. That place proved popular with critics and customers too.
This is also the story of the enduring power of friendship and love. Friendship, respect, trust, admiration, and love in the face of the demise of a long-term marriage, where two people who see the essential good in each other decide it’s a bad idea to stay together. And so they go their separate ways personally but manage, despite the initial challenges of seeing the ex every single day, to keep working together as partners in a labor of love. … Continue reading »
A councilmember takes to Twitter, other officials lag
Councilmember Kriss Worthington took to the Twitterverse on Thursday, and he did so with a vengeance.
Worthington signed up for Twitter in the morning, and began sending out a steady stream of tweets. “Congratulations to Berkeley High RISE students (EBAYC) on filming immigration documentary “The Next Step,” was one tweet. “Pinkberry’s grand opening on Telegraph Avenue happening soon!” was another.
By evening he had sent out 15 messages to his nine followers (Two of whom are Berkeleyside reporters).
“I just signed up today,” said Worthington. “We won’t send out quite so many every day, but in a burst of enthusiasm we sent out a bunch today. We’ll sort of find a pace how much to send and how much to be humorous and how much to be serious. We’ll be working on that.”
(The “we” must mean his staff is helping with his tweets). … Continue reading »
Summer camps: the great outdoors a stone’s throw away
The East Bay Regional Park District still has scholarships (“camperships”) available for its summer day camps — and it is keen to ensure they all get claimed by under-resourced families.
The camps include Little Farm and Junior Lifeguards camps at Tilden Regional Park, as well as swim lessons at Roberts Park in Oakland.
The photographs here demonstrate just how much fun kids can have spending time in Berkeley’s great outdoors.
Financial aid is available for qualifying families. Applications … Continue reading »
