Free adoptions at Berkeley Animal Shelter this weekend
By Julia Musto
This Saturday and Sunday only, all adoptions at the city’s Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter (BACS) will be free, as part of the organization’s annual “Adoptathon” matchmaker.
Adoptions will be free to qualified adopters, and the shelter will receive $500 for every dog or cat adopted, courtesy of Maddie’s Fund. (To qualify for a free adoption, people must have documentation proving home ownership, or a rental contract stating you can have pets.)
The shelter will also receive $1,000 for every adoption of a senior animal, or animal with a long-term medical condition.
This is the second year for the event and the second year BACS has participated, according to BACS coordinator Amelia Funghi. “The event is a vehicle for adopting homeless animals in Contra Costa and Alameda counties and also a fundraiser for local shelters and rescue groups,” she said. … Continue reading »

Where do you get the best pizza in Berkeley? You tell us
Today this space is all about cheese. And crust. And toppings.
Got opinions about who turns out the best pizza in town? We know you do. So here’s your chance to share your pie picks with fellow readers.
That’s right folks, today, the Friday food column takes a break from regularly scheduled programming to poll readers about their pizza preferences. (The first in an occasional series where residents weigh in on their favorite foods found close to home.)
We know that for every die-hard devotee of Cheese Board pizza there’s an equally loyal Gioia fan to be found.
There’s pizza for all palates and pocketbooks here, whether you favor California-style, wood-fired pies pioneered by the Chez Panisse crew (foraged greens and artisan goat cheese, anyone?), Brooklyn-inspired bites with trademark thin crusts and judicious use of ingredients, or the sloppy cheese slices popular among the campus crowd. … Continue reading »
Emily Kassier, who attended Berkeley High School and was a first-year student studying literature at Bennington College in Vermont, was found dead in her dorm Thursday.
The cause of her death is unknown. The Bennington Banner reported that the police are conducting an investigation to determine if alcohol, or an on-campus party they believe Kassier attended, were contributing factors. Her family was informed Thursday morning.
Berkeley High, from where the 18-year-old Kassier graduated last year, and where she worked as an assistant teacher, released a statement by email headed “Sad News”. It reads: “It is with great sadness we report the sudden death of Emily Kassier BHS class of 2010. Emily who was attending Bennington College in Vermont suffered a seizure.”
Berkeley Flea Market: Going strong after three decades
By Niclas Ericsson
The downturn in the economy may be a threat to many small merchants in Berkeley, but the 35-year-old Berkeley Flea Market is still alive and kicking (watch the slideshow above to see it in action).
With its ethnic and lively environment, and diverse array of used goods, the market offers a distinct alternative to the more commercial enterprises in the city.
“It’s definitely Berkeley,” said Jane Boiso, who lives nearby. “There is more of a neighborhood feel to it.”
On most weekends, the market, located in the parking lot of the Ashby BART station, is teeming with students, local residents and people from all around the Bay Area looking for a bargain.
“The economy is bringing the vendors out,” said Prestina Wilson, assistant manager of the market. “And a lot of customers say they don’t go to the malls anymore because it’s too expensive.” … Continue reading »
Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, who represents Berkeley, is calling for community input into how to re-draw county district lines.
County officials adjust the boundaries of the supervisorial districts every 10 years after census results are released. Carson represents the Fifth District, which includes Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville, Piedmont, and parts of Oakland.
The population in the district has changed during the past 10 years. Berkeley’s population, for example, went up 9.6% between 2000 and 2010, from 102,734 to 112,580, according to census figures. Carson’s district now has 6,040 people more than the median for the other supervisorial districts.
The deadline for submitting ideas for new district lines to the Alameda County Community Development Agency is June 10. Carson will be holding a meeting Monday June 6, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Northbrae Community Church at 1941 The Alameda. He is seeing input into some proposed changes to the county district lines.
Dan Marks, Berkeley’s planning director, will also talk about proposed development changes in the region.
